Bernheim Wheat Whiskey is one of our favorites simply due to its uniqueness.  It can run the gamut between a little thin and one-dimensional to sweet and luscious on the taste buds, depending on the bottling. Since our last take on Bernheim, we’ve seen a new packaging that included the addition of an age statement, which is, frankly, downright amazing in this day and age.  Rather than the copper-ish plastic…

The story of I.W. Harper bourbon is not all that different from many other brands that rose to prominence and then disappeared in decades past.  Countless brands rose and fell before, during, and after the dark days that were prohibition.  But I.W. Harper is soon to be among the few that is staging a comeback, thanks to global whiskey giant Diageo. Modern Thirst was on hand on march 19th for a preview of the whiskey that should be hitting U.S. shelves in the coming weeks. Diageo Whiskey Ambassador, Dough Kragle, hosted the event at the Bernheim National Forest visitor’s center, and we…

I am often asked by visitors who come to the area to experience the bourbon culture of Kentucky which distillery I enjoy most. The regular names always come to mind- Jim Beam, Buffalo Trace, Makers Mark, Evan Williams, Woodford Reserve, etc. For some reason, one of the oldest and largest of the distilleries always seems to be missing from my list: Barton 1792. I can’t honestly say why, unless it’s because, like it’s sister Distillery (Buffalo Trace), Barton 1792 isn’t officially on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. I certainly like Very Old Barton, especially the bottled-in-bond iteration. I’ve never really given…

Some 2 decades ago, a venerable, prohibition-era bourbon brand ceased production.  20 years later it’s back. It’s not a unique story.  Many bourbon labels have come and gone over the years, and many have been resurrected in the recent bourbon boom years.  I.W. Harper is joining the list. I.W. Harper was founded by Isaac Wolfe Bernheim and produced at the Bernheim Brothers distillery in Louisville.   That distillery eventually was replaced with the “New” Bernheim distillery now owned by Heaven Hill.  However, many of the existing stocks of the distillery prior to Heaven Hill’s purchase were sold off with the business when Diageo…

At a recent meeting of the Bourbon Society of Greater Cincinnati, Buffalo Trace Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley spilled the beans on an potentially exciting new offering from sister-distiller, Barton’s 1792. According to Wheatley, there is a new Ridgemont Reserve 1792 sitting in bottles ready to be shipped. He didn’t specify exactly what that new product would be, but on the recent Media Tour for the Bourbon Classic, we were treated to a barrel proof 1792 that was, and I don’t say this lightly, absolutely amazing. While Wheatley is not the Master Distiller of Barton 1792, it stands to reason he…

What is an average red blooded American who happens to blog about and review whiskey on a regular basis to do when his home is blanketed under over a foot of soft, fluffy, white, COLD snow? Make a cocktail with it…out of bourbon, of course. I sort of winged this one based on what I had available in the Modern Thirst compound.  It’s sort of a cross between a snow cone, a bourbon sour, and a whiskey grenadine.  So it’s a Snourbon Grenadour…or something.  Who cares?  It was tasty. You’ll need: Bourbon (I chose Ancient Ancient Age 10…
