Cocktail Corner: The ModernThirst® Old Fashioned

    BillBy BillSeptember 5, 2014Updated:October 27, 2015No Comments2 Mins Read

What better way to celebrate National Bourbon Heritage Month than with a refreshing Bourbon cocktail?  Throughout the month, we’ll be posting various bourbon cocktail recipes.  If anyone has the patriotic zeal (Bourbon Heritage Month is authorized by Act of Congress!) to try these bourbon cocktail recipes or any others this month, send a photo to Bill@modernthirst.com and we’ll post them to the site!

This one’s a small twist on a time-tested favorite. Tradition says the first Old Fashioned was created by a bartender at Louisville’s Pendennis Club in the late 19th century, and that Colonel James E. Pepper, a distiller, later took the drink to New York where it spread in popularity.

For our Old Fashioned, I recommend a high-rye, high proof bourbon, such as Old Granddad 114. The rye gives it a spicer, more citrus-oriented flavor while the extra ABV adds a little kick.  You’ll also need Angostura bitters, water, ice, a slice of lemon, slice of orange, maraschino cherries, ice, and Woodford Reserve Bourbon Vanilla simple syrup.

    Ingredients:

    • 2 Oz. Old Graddad 114 Bourbon
    • 2 Dashes Angostura Bitters.
    • 1 Splash of Water
    • 1 slice Lemon
    • 1 Slice Orange
    • 1 Maraschino Cherry
    • ¼ Oz Woodford reserve Bourbon vanilla Simple Syrup

     Directions:

    1. Mix Simple Syrup, and bitters in a glass, splash with water and stir
    2. Add the orange peel and muddle gently
    3. Add Bourbon and stir
    4. Add Ice and stir
    5. Twist lemon and add to glass
    6. Add orange slice and cherry to glass and serve
