Beer Review: Three Floyds Alpha King

So despite my penchant for bourbon, I rarely make it to my local liquor store without checking the craft beer aisle as well. My latest stop happened to have me in the store as they were stocking a couple of different offering from Three Floyds, including the company’s flagship beer, Alpha King. A quick check with resident Modern Thirst biermeister, Matt, and I knew I had to pick up a six pack.

According to the brewer, Alpha King is an American Pale Ale (APA) made from Cenntennial, Cascade, and Warrior hops. It has bold citrus flavors and aromas.

Alpha King is 6.5% ABV, with 66 IBU. It is not a low-volume production, but the popularity of the brand and this particular beer can make it tough to find in stores.

I found it to be a beautiful orange and amber color with a light lingering head. I could definitely smell the citrus on the nose, with orange peel, grapefruit and lemon seemingly smacking me in the face. The taste is similarly dominated by the citrus character, but balanced by malt and bitterness form the hops. The finish is bitter, but crisp and does not linger overly long. Ultimately, this is a very approachable beer.

The Alpha King is a flagship for the modern American Craft beer scene, and deservedly so. If you see it on tap or on the shelves, don’t hesitate to give it a try!
