The newest, coolest way to get your beer from the local brewery, is not in a pint glass, or even a growler…it is THE CROWLER!
A crowler is a single use quart sized can of beer. Half the size of a traditional growler, the 32 ounce crowler starts off as a can without a top. The taphouse bartender, shoots some CO2 into the empty can to clear the beer enemy oxygen from the can, it is then overfilled with delicious brewery fresh beer. The top is then placed on and an old fashioned canning machine which seals it. You can drink it from the normal flip-top in the can, but we here at ModernThirst would recommend pouring it in to an appropriate beer glass.
The result is a fun portable way of getting draft beer from your local brewery. And it can help eliminate the noise of empty growlers awaiting fill from clanging in your trunk. I’m lucky enough to live close enough to one of the early adapters of the Crowler: Rhinegeist (a fantastic brewery by the way) Featured photos are displayed below. Will this replace the growler? probably not, but I see it as a not just a fad, it should be a staple of local breweries in the years to come.
Other notable brewers using Crowlers are : West Sixth, Cigar City and Oskar Blues
