Hello again, you wonderful readers of Modern Thirst, you! Since we’re right in the thick of the final season of Game of Thrones, and winter has come and gone, we’ll be taking a look at a whisky that was designed as a companion of the show. Today we’ll be reviewing the 83.4 proof Game of Thrones White Walker by Johnnie Walker. As Johnnie Walker is one of the world’s most ubiquitous and eponymous brands, we’ll skip the history of the company. But the bottle itself is what sets this offering apart.

This new blend perfectly reminds Johnnie Walker and Game of Thrones fans alike that “Winter is Here.” The limited edition bottle utilizes thermochromic ink to give fans a frosty surprise message when frozen. With flavor notes like caramelized sugar, vanilla, and fresh red berries, White Walker by Johnnie Walker makes for a delicious serve. The new blend is best served ice cold, inspired by the White Walkers beyond The Wall.
Editor’s Note: I reviewed this whisky at room temperature. The score would have been much lower if I had reviewed it from the freezer as the bottle suggests.
Appearance
- Light amber to straw
Nose
- Citrus, buttered popcorn, fresh fruits.
Taste
- Faint note of malt, aforementioned buttered popcorn, light vanilla, blueberry.
Finish
- Very little to speak of, very short and thin.
Synopsis
- As a fan of the show, I really wanted to like this whisky. Unfortunately, as so many of these types of tie-in products end up, this whisky is nothing more than a gimmick. If you are buying it for the collectible bottle as I did, it is just fine for that purpose. But a whisky drinker’s whisky, this is not. To make matters worse, the whisky is suggested to be served chilled, and it loses any of its more redeeming qualities when it is. In fact, all of the flavor is so subdued it ends up drinking more like a vodka than a whisky. Perhaps that was the idea, but I would steer clear of this one.
