The Stone  Enjoy By Series, is a tribute to, and an in your face reminder to the fact that hops taste best when fresh.  Since 2012, this premier California brewer has been releasing bombers of a Double IPA with a date that they recommend that you Enjoy it By.  The date is in large print, and sometimes corresponds with a relatively significant date.  The first one that I tried was the second installment of this series 12.12.12.  I instantly fell in love with its bold fresh floral hop flavors and aroma. Since then I have been buying into every offering in the series.…

The newest, coolest way to get your beer from the local brewery, is not in a pint glass, or even a growler…it is THE CROWLER! A crowler is a single use quart sized can of beer.  Half the size of a traditional growler, the 32 ounce crowler  starts off as a can without a top.  The taphouse bartender, shoots some CO2 into the empty can to clear the beer enemy oxygen from the can, it is then overfilled with delicious brewery fresh  beer.  The top is then placed on and an old fashioned canning machine which seals it. You can drink…

After an ambitious start to the Great Brewery Gallery, we head down to southern Maine to a rather unassuming brewery.  In fact, unless a local told you about this place, the only way that you would know it was a brewery was if you happened to be driving down this rural street after 4pm on a Friday and saw the Kinko’s made “Beer” sign.  Funky Bow Brewery and Beer Company is  a small 6.5 BBL brewery located on a 20 acre farm in beautiful Lyman, Maine.  They only open on Fridays and they are quickly at standing room only for…

We are just over a month since we started this ModernThirst Barrel Aging Experiment. And I am happy to report that we have progress!  This tasting was conducted on 7/28/14, just about a month after we barreled our Old Weller Antique 107 in the 1 Liter barrel.  Check out the comparison to the un-aged OWA 107 below. As I pour the tasting out of the barrel,  rich copper liquid was accompanied with bits of real oak (so you know its good). Color: The color of the aged bourbon is new certainly, discernibly darker than the original.  even if the photos still…
