Today in Mexican history, something happened. I don’t think the typical American really cares for any reason other than having an excuse to drink. This holiday is actually celebrated more in America than it is in Mexico. So get out there and enjoy a Sangria, or the ModernThirst special: Dos Equis Amber and a Margarita on the Rocks!

Our first reader requested beer review is  one big beer. The Dogfather Imperial Stout by Laughing Dog was requested after the 13 Bombers of Beer post.  Aroma: Good bourbon smell.  Very malty.  They use 6 different malts in this, obviously mostly very dark malts.  Much different than an Irish stout, very solid. 20/24 Appearance: Very dark, just like it should be.  The almost caramel colored head is very attractive 6/6  Flavor: A little too malty, even for a stout.  Luckily a great bourbon flavor comes in to add some balance, however there is still a bitterness, that comes more from the…

Well this is certainly intriguing, especially for someone running an alcohol review business; The promise of sampling different beers all night and then being able to coherently write about them sounds too good to be true! I’m not sure if this is an old wives tail, or there is something to it.  Considering the source, I think it is worth a try.  If you try it, please report your findings back to us! The entire article can be found on Esquire Jim Koch knows beer. He also knows a beer trick that may change your life “You wanna know…

It is always fun when a beer has a timely and relevant name for the Daily Toast! Today we feature Ryan and the Beaster Bunny by Evil Twin out of Denmark.  Evil Twin makes some very interesting beers that are worth your attention.  They are a Gypsy Brewer, where they do not own an actual brewery themselves, rather, they travel around and ‘borrow’ other breweries to brew their various beers  (A beer by a fellow gypsy brewer, Tool has been mentioned on ModernThirst previously) This offering is a Saison, brewed at Two Roads brewing in Stratford , CT.  See the…

I have accumulated quite a few bombers recently with the intent to post about the more notable ones.  Bomber is the slang term for a 22 once bottle.  Many craft breweries will put limited releases  and other specialty beers in these 22 ounce bottles,  typically these are beers that are not sold in 6 packs of 12 ounce bottles.  This also means the are able to charge a much higher per ounce price (luckily still way below wine prices) The reason I am posting this picture is I want to give the readers a chance to request a review.  I…

There is no clear definition of ‘double’ or ‘imperial’ when it comes to IPAs.  Obviously they both imply a higher hop content, with malted grain (and therefore ABV) to support it, however there is no real definition.   Rico Sauvin from Against The Grain Brewing in Louisville, KY certainly toes the line between IPA and IIPA (or DIPA). What makes this offering unique is the hop profile;  the aroma is a grassy, tropical treat and the taste follows suit.  It is not overly bitter nor overly hoppy, but still complex.  It is gives a drinkability that you wouldn’t expect, but has…

This year I chose to turn a Northern Liberties IPA by Christian Moerlein green. This is probably their best bottled beer, look for a review of this and other offerings of theirs in the future, but for now….Erin go bragh!

It is about time that an organization of America’s native spirit is established in the North. I was lucky enough to attend the inaugural meeting of The Bourbon Society of Cincinnati on Monday and, to be fair the meeting was actually held in Northern Kentucky (baby steps). This society came about through happenstance.  It is a collaboration between Facebook groups and a member of the Louisville Bourbon Society.  The dreams and hard work of Butch Wilburn, Marc Collins, Todd Carnes and Chad Finni made this group a reality in the Cincinnati Area.  The group is a celebration of  bourbon, the attendees of…
