Saturday, June 13th marked the 3rd annual Bourbon By the Bridge event in Louisville.  Bourbon By the Bridge is a charity event supporting  Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA) of the River Region. CASA of the River Region supports and promotes court-appointed volunteer advocacy for abused and neglected children so that they can thrive in safe, permanent homes. I’m setting up a blind tasting for an upcoming comparison review…two low-priced, high demand wheaters- both aged 12 years. Weller 12 Year vs. Very Special Old Fitzgerald 12 Year. I’ll be doing the tasting blind, but I’m fairly confident I’ll know the difference, as these have pretty distinct flavor profiles despite the similarities in mash bill and age. Barton announced today the first in its lineup of new bourbons and whiskeys.  The first one will be, according to Bourbon Buzz, the Sweet Wheat recipe.  We were all hoping for barrel proof, but this should be interesting… BARDSTOWN, KENTUCKY (June 10, 2015) – Barton 1792 Distillery will soon debut the first ever new 1792 whiskey expression, entitled 1792 Sweet Wheat. There whiskey strikes a great balance of cooking spices with a little heat from the alcohol on the back of the tongue, making this a really nice sip. In fact, it’s one of the better rye whiskeys I’ve tasted in recent months, and I wish I’d picked up more of it. Very nice.

If you follow the various bourbon message boards and bloggers, you’ve no doubt heard by now that Heaven Hill has applied for a new label for 20 year old John E. Fitzgerald bourbon containing whiskey distilled at none other than Stitzel-Weller in Louisville. Don’t go crazy yet…the price will no doubt be astronomical, and thus far they’ve only applied for 375 ML bottles, meaning that astronomical price will get you a half-sized bottle.  And given recent trends, I’d almost bet money that these will be gift shop only.  Nor is application for label approval a guarantee that the whiskey will…
