This truncated review was originally posted as part of the  Budget Bourbon Battle Royale.  See the original post here. What it is: Evan Williams White label is a 4 year old Bottled-in-Bond bourbon produced by Heaven Hill’s New Bernheim distillery in Louisville, KY.  It can be found in most markets, and is priced under $15.  It is bottled at 100 proof. Appearance: Deep amber. Nose: Corn, Bakery Goods, Vanilla Taste: There are some early fruits, including apricot and banana, but they give way to traditional smoother bourbon flavors of vanilla, caramel, maple syrup, and oak. Finish: Surprisingly long and smooth, with black pepper and…

As you can likely tell from the name, the establishment is based upon a huge bourbon selection and bourbon-themed/paired foods. It is also stop on Louisville’s Urban Bourbon Trail. Since this review was not done in a controlled environment, and instead was done on-the-fly over dinner, it may seem slightly less structured. Undoubtedly, There are fewer photos, so it may visually…

This post marks the eigth installment of the Budget Bourbon Battle Royale.  (Follow this link for previous rounds.)  If you’re not familiar with this series, we’re reviewing bottles that can be had for $20 or less in most areas. Thus far, Old Fitzgerald has fended off several challengers and remains our reigning king of the budget ring.  In our last round, Old Fitz Bottled-in-Bond wiped the matt with Ancient Age 90. In this round, our champion faces off against another Buffalo Trace challenger. This time, it’s McAffee’s Benchmark Old no.8, or just “Benchmark 8” for short. Round 6: Old Fitzgerald…

This truncated review was originally posted as part of the Budget Bourbon Battle Royale. See the original post here. Benchmark 8 is yet another of Buffalo Trace’s products distilled using their proprietary low rye Mash Bill #1 (along with Eagle Rare, Old Charter, Col. E. H. Taylor, Stagg, Stagg. Jr, and standard Buffalo Trace.) That’s a big lineup of bourbons using the same recipe. Some might think that therefore makes them essentially the same bourbon, right? Wrong. As we’ve mentioned before, when, where, and how long bourbon is aged has as much influence on the flavor as the recipe of…

Happy Monday, readers! My apologies for our quiet period (and you’re welcome to those who enjoyed not seeing our posts pop up every day). I had a busy weekend, starting Thursday, that left me little time to write for the site.  So we’ve been dark I played a golf tournament Thursday through Saturday, playing as splendidly awful as I usually do. But we kicked off the event with a wine party Wednesday night that featured a 6-liter bottle of a wine followed by about 10 more standard 750mL bottles. That almost certainly had an impact on how I played Thursday…

3,000! On April 15th, 2014, Modern Thirst moved from its original hosting environment at Wordpress.com to Godaddy.com and launched our new, professional web design (We initially launched in January of 2014). At the same time, we registered with Google Analytics, allowing us to track our site’s traffic on the new hosting environment. Today, we passed 3,000 unique visitors since April 15th. That’s over 10,000 page views in just a few short months! Thanks to everyone who has helped us grow from our infancy through today, which I’d guess would be our toddler stage, since we obviously plan to eventually dominate…

Yesterday marked the 3rd Monday of the month. That means one thing: the Bourbon Society of Louisville was holding their monthly meeting. If you’ve followed our site thus far, you’ll know that due to fellow-owner Matt Gates’ residence in Cincinnati, we have attended several of the inaugural meetings held by the fledgling Greater Cincinnati Chapter of the society, which is off to a roaring start. It was not due to lack of interest that we hadn’t attended a meeting of the original society in Bourbon Central, USA (Louisville), but mainly due to timing. In fact, a high school classmate of…

If you will recall, Modern Thirst visited the Jim Beam American Stillhouse in Clermont, KY back in February.  At that time, I posted a photo of a bourbon sold only at the Stillhouse gift shop called, not-so-imaginatively, Jim Beam American Stillhouse Bourbon. I passed on the purchase of this bottle in February, but with my in-laws visiting the distillery over the weekend, I asked them to snag a bottled for me.  They delivered. I don’t know much about this bourbon.  Introduced in 2013, it appears to be standard Jim Beam juice, aged 7 years and bottled at 80 Proof.  The uniqueness appears…
