One of the great perks of living in the midst of the Great Bourbon Boom is that there are more new options available to us than ever before.  Producers are experimenting with new proofs, new recipes, and new concepts.  Some of the recent developments: Barrel Proof Elijah Craig? Yes, please. Single Barrel Jim Beam? What took them so long? Barrel Proof Makers Mark?  It’s on its way. But there are still so many great ideas left hanging in the world of whiskey, that I’m sure our readers could one-up the masters.  If you could be master distiller of any producer for one…

While the bulk of Modern Thirst’s attention has been focused on Bourbon and Craft Beer, along with a smattering of Rye and Wheat whiskey, Modern Thirst does not limit itself to any particular form of libation. We are equal opportunity sippers. Sometimes, the opportunity to sip something exciting is presented, and it’s important to take the leap. Yesterday, I had the fortune of visiting a good friend, who generously offered me a pour of Grand Marnier 150, or as the producer calls it, Cuvée Spéciale 1827-1977 Cent Cinquentenaire. From Grand Marnier: Launched by Jacques Marnier Lapostolle, the company’s CEO, in 1977…

In mid-April of this year, Modern Thirst began a drive to expand our readership from a handful of local followers to a larger base of followers. To accomplish that, we moved our site to a new hosting environment and redesigned the look and feel of the site to provide a more reader-friendly and professional experience. In mid-June, we happily reported that since switching to the new format on April 15th, had received over 3,000 visitors.  It marked the first real milestone in Modern Thirst’s existence. Since then, we have reviewed 10 new whiskeys, several beers, visited multiple breweries, and had a…

Last night marked the 3rd Monday of the month, meaning the Bourbon Society met at the Nucleus building in Downtown Louisville. As my first meeting as a dues-paying member, I decided to bring along a bottle of Four Roses Private Selections OESQ Barrel Strength bourbon to share with the table and the society in general.  I can safely say it was a big hit, as it was nearly empty by the time the guest speaker, Fred Noe of Jim Beam Brands, took the podium.  I’ll have a full review of it at a later date. Fred Noe, Master Distiller…

Very few developments in bourbon over the past several years have elicited such deeply held emotional responses as Diageo’s Orphan Barrel Distilling program. From bourbon bloggers to bourbon drinkers, there doesn’t seem to be anyone familiar with them who doesn’t have some sort of strong emotional reaction either in favor of or against these releases. Why? First, let’s review the Orphan Barrel Distilling project. The OBD project is a product of Diageo. For those unfamiliar, Diageo is the world’s largest spirits company, owning everything from Guinness and Red Stripe Beer labels to Bailey’s, J&B, Smirnoff, Crown Royal and Johnny Walker.…

Though Modern Thirst was unable to attend Monday’s meeting of the Greater Cincy Bourbon Society, the Chad Finni of the Soceity was kind enough to send us a recap along with some photos of the event!  Looks like it was a great time! By Chad Finni, The 5th monthly event of The Bourbon Society of Greater Cincinnati proved to be yet another good one, but with a twist, or zest in this case. The Bourbon Society guest speaker offered history, banter, and of course, bourbon to taste. Bill Withlow, from Wiseguy Longue, along with fellow co-worker Kevin, joined us…

Today, Modern Thirst welcomes its first Guest Contributor:  Justin McDaniel of Frankfort, KY. Jolly Pumpkin La Roja, Blend 11 Bottled 6-7-12 Reviewed 6-18-14 7.2% ABV Style: Artisan Amber Ale (Belgian Style) Brewer: Jolly Pumpkin By Justin McDaniel You tell almost anyone that you’re excited to drink a beer that is two years past its “bottled on” date and they will look at you like you’re crazy and probably make some kind of disgusted face.  But if that beer is Jolly Pumpkin La Roja, a sour amber ale aged in oak barrels, then the age is totally justified since sour ales can age like fine wines as time…
