Monday, August 11th marked the latest meeting of Cincinnati’s Bourbon Society. The guest speaker was Seth Thompson of The Bourbon Review. Seth spoke about the history of the publication, including its first issues and its Bourbon Country Guide annual release. The Bourbon Review is a well-known and well respected publication, and Seth’s presence shows that the Society plans to continue to bring a wide mix of bourbon related experts to its members. For those in Louisville, Westport Whiskey & Wine is a great shop with a fantastic tasting room, and always a great selection on their shelves. The Owners, Chris and Richard, are always friendly, always helpful, and very knowledgeable about their business. After chatting with Co-Owner Chris Zaborowski…

That’s not to say standard Elijah Craig is lacking in flavor, it’s actually a very good bourbon, and one we reviewed very favorably. But give me a good bourbon strong as the day it was born, without being overly filtered or watered down to proof, and you’ve made me a very happy man. This retails for much lower than I paid. The MSRP is closer…

On Friday, Matt travelled down I-71 for a weekend full of bourbon, golf spectating, more bourbon and…umm…I’m forgetting something…oh right: Bourbon! If this photo doesn’t adequately portray the awesomeness that is 2 inches of rain per day for 4 days combined with 250,000 spectators, then nothing will. This is the entrance to…

I created the wheel back in April for my “Tasting Bourbon 101” post, and I suppose it has been a useful tool for some of our readers.  So in order to help facilitate your own tastings, I’ve created a separate file of the flavor wheel along with a tasting sheet you can print off and use at home when tasting and scoring your own bourbons! The flavor wheel  is just a guide…

What do you get when you add 5 bourbons lovers, a microphone, and five really bad bourbons? A podcast! Modern Thirst and Big Earl’s Beverage Company (of Nicholasville, KY) were invited to join Bottom of the Barrel’s “Bourbon Limbo” podcast last weekend.  So off I went to meet some fellow bourbonites. The premise of the podcast is simple:  A blind tasting of five of the cheapest and/or worst-selling bourbons at Big Earl’s Beverage Company and see if there is any worth to any of them.  The results are highly  entertaining.  Check out the podcast at Bottom of the Barrel and listen to their…
