Budget Bourbon Battle Royale Round 1

    Posted: May 27, 2014

Not all bourbons are top shelf collectibles.  Hence, not all bourbon drinkers can or are willing to drop $50, $60, or $100+ on a single bottle of bourbon.  That leaves a large swath of the drinking public often left in the cold when focusing almost entirely on premium top-shelf bourbons. So when Modern Thirst announced

Budget Bourbon Battle Royale Recap and Thoughts

    Posted: July 3, 2014

9 rounds. 10 budget bourbons. And so many to go. When I started the budget bourbon series, my thoughts were twofold: First, I wanted to provide some coverage to those seeking a more value-based approach to bourbon. As I originally wrote, not everyone can or wants to afford a rare limited release pour every time

If you’re willing to return to these bourbons, I would like to read your impressions after comparing the top three or four together. Given that I live well outside the distribution area for the Heaven Hill BiB, I’m less interested in reading about that one, but I’m particularly interested in your impressions of the Evan Williams, Very Old Barton BiB, and Old Fitzgerald BiB.

Certainly! I actually return to a couple of them pretty often!

Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-bond is probably the bourbon I drink more than any other at home (now that Elijah Craig lost its age statement), and Evan Williams, from a value perspective, is a very nice sip. I prefer the bonded iteration of that as well, but that’s not as widely available. I’m not a huge fan of VOB bib, as I think the Barton Mashbill is a little one-dimensional when not aged more significantly. it’s all black pepper on the tip of the tongue and little else.
